                              The Story

By the end of the 1950s, Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team at GM were turning their attention to the creation of an entirely new generation of Chevrolet Corvette. Based on work with the experimental CERV-I and Sting Ray concept cars, this new second-generation Corvette debuted in 1963 and featured radical new styling combined with a much-improved chassis. Arkus-Duntov dramatically improved the handling of the Corvette by shortening the wheelbase and installing an independent rear suspension developed on the CERV-I concept car. By quickening its steering and shifting more of the car’s weight over the frame-mounted differential, this new chassis was lighter and better balanced.

While the chassis of the second-generation Corvette was much improved, it was the outer, visible features that received the most dramatic changes. Designed by Larry Shinoda and Peter Brock under styling maestro Bill Mitchell, the second-generation Corvette Sting Ray, as it came to be known, was the first Corvette to benefit from wind tunnel testing and featured an aerodynamic chisel nose that hid four recessed headlights, passenger doors that cut into the roofline and a unique pair of split rear windows, which would come to define this new Corvette coupe as a “Split Window” Sting Ray.

This 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Coupe is one of just 10,594 built that first year. Finished in Sebring Silver with a red vinyl interior, it’s powered by a matching-numbers 327/340 HP V-8 engine mated to a 4-speed gearbox and has been the subject of a frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration. Other significant features include its power windows, power steering, power brakes, factory Delco AM/FM radio, in-dash clock and the factory hubcaps adorning its wheels, which are wrapped in whitewall tires. This stunning split window Corvette represents a rare opportunity to own an exceedingly original example of one of the most desirable Corvette models.
